Germany to boost anti-UAV security at eight major airports

Germany is accelerating the deployment of detection and response capabilities for unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at critical aviation hubs. This move follows an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August, where a small UAV carrying explosives—identified as containing PETN and Semtex—was discovered near Antonov Airlines cargo aircraft. While the explosive device failed to detonate, the event prompted investigations into the motive and perpetrator.

The German Aviation Association (BDL) has identified eight major airports to receive enhanced anti-UAV capabilities by the end of 2026. These critical infrastructure sites include Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Leipzig/Halle, Munich, and Stuttgart. The initiative aims to improve the detection, identification, and coordinated response to illegal drone activity, addressing a growing security challenge seen across European airports.
