Germany to conduct nationwide emergency warning system test

Germany will conduct its nationwide warning day on September 10, 2026, to test the functionality and coordination of various emergency alert systems. The exercise, coordinated by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), aims to ensure the population can be effectively reached during catastrophes, emergencies, or defense scenarios.

Starting at 11:00 AM, a test warning will be triggered via the Modular Warning System (MoWaS). This signal will be disseminated through multiple channels, including radio, television, warning apps such as NINA and KATWARN, and Cell Broadcast technology, which sends alerts directly to mobile devices. An all-clear signal is scheduled for approximately 11:45 AM.

Local authorities across various regions are participating with specific measures. In Hamburg, 205 sirens will be tested, while in the Saarland, up to 590 sirens are expected to sound. In Frankfurt, sirens will specifically activate around industrial parks. In regions like Leipzig and parts of Frankfurt that lack comprehensive siren networks, digital warning paths like Cell Broadcast and digital information boards will play a critical role. The day also serves to sensitize the public to different alarm tones and procedures, such as seeking shelter when a rising siren tone is heard.
