Germany to conduct nationwide emergency warning test

Germany will conduct a nationwide warning day on Thursday, September 10, 2026, to test various emergency alert systems. Led by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), the exercise aims to familiarize the public with warning procedures and verify the functionality of existing infrastructure.

Alerts will be distributed through multiple channels, including Cell Broadcast technology, warning apps such as NINA and KATWARN, radio, television, digital displays, and sirens. For the first time, the all-clear signal will also be tested via Cell Broadcast. Most modern smartphones running iOS 16.1 or later and Android 11 or later are capable of receiving these alerts.

In local municipalities like Ingelheim am Rhein, the test includes stationary sirens and mobile sirens mounted on vehicles. In Ingelheim, a one-minute rising tone will signal a warning at 11:00 AM, followed by a one-minute continuous tone at approximately 11:45 AM to signal the all-clear. Local authorities are requesting citizens to provide feedback on the location and timing of heard signals to assist in evaluating the system's coverage.
