Germany to conduct nationwide emergency warning test on September 10
Germany will conduct its sixth nationwide Warntag (Warning Day) on Thursday, September 10, 2026, to test civil protection systems and emergency communication channels. The exercise, coordinated by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), is scheduled to begin with a warning at 11:00 AM, followed by an all-clear signal around 11:45 AM.
The test utilizes a multi-channel approach including sirens, radio, television, digital information boards, and warning apps such as NINA and KATWARN. A key component is the Cell Broadcast service, which sends alerts directly to compatible mobile phones without requiring an app. For the first time, the all-clear signal can also be sent via Cell Broadcast.
Regional participation varies; for example, hundreds of schools in Schleswig-Holstein are using the day to train students in crisis behavior, while cities like Cologne and Aachen will activate extensive siren networks. The goal is to ensure technical reliability and familiarize the public with correct responses to emergencies such as natural disasters, major fires, or defense scenarios.
