Germany to hold nationwide emergency warning test on September 10

Germany will conduct its nationwide Warning Day (Warntag) on Thursday, September 10, 2026. Led by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), the exercise aims to test the functionality of various emergency warning systems and familiarize the public with correct procedures during a crisis.

At 11:00 AM, a central test warning will be triggered via the Modular Warning System (MoWaS). This signal will be disseminated through multiple channels, including warning apps like NINA and KATWARN, radio, television, and Cell Broadcast technology. Cell Broadcast is notable this year as it will also be used to transmit the all-clear signal (Entwarnung) for the first time, following a feature update in late 2025.

In addition to digital alerts, many municipalities will activate local sirens. The test includes specific siren signals: a one-minute rising and falling wail to signal danger, and a one-minute steady tone to signal the all-clear. An all-clear signal is scheduled for approximately 11:45 AM. The BBK will also conduct an online survey to gather public feedback on the effectiveness and reach of the various warning channels.
