Germany to deploy Eurofighter jets to Latvia for election security
Germany is deploying four Eurofighter fighter jets to Latvia to secure the country’s airspace ahead of its parliamentary elections on October 3. The move comes at the request of Latvian authorities and is intended to bolster security on NATO’s eastern flank.
The aircraft will be stationed at the Lielvārde Air Base in central Latvia for approximately one week, spanning from late September to early October. The deployment will also include several dozen German military personnel to support the mission. The jets will operate as part of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing North Mission.
This security measure follows a series of drone incursions in the Baltic Sea region. Latvian officials have reported foreign drone activity in 2026, including incidents in the Latgale region and Balvi municipality, which have raised concerns regarding Russian electronic warfare and hybrid attacks.
