Germany faces severe drought and low water levels in Rhine and Lake Constance

Germany is facing severe environmental challenges due to extreme drought and low water levels. In the Rhine region, water levels at the Kaub gauge have dropped into negative values, impacting inland shipping. To mitigate logistics disruptions, Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger has announced temporary exceptions to the Sunday truck driving ban, allowing goods to be moved by road when river transport is restricted.

Environmental experts from the Hessian State Office for Nature, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) warn that low water levels increase the concentration of pollutants. While sewage plants filter most waste, persistent substances like pharmaceutical residues, industrial chemicals, and sweeteners remain. Reduced water flow limits the natural self-purification capacity of rivers, potentially leading to harmful effects on aquatic organisms.

Additionally, Lake Constance is nearing a critical threshold, with water levels at Konstanz potentially falling below 2.50 meters. This situation is driven by a combination of a snow-poor winter, low precipitation, and high evaporation rates during a warm summer.
