Germany to hold commemorations for Kristallnacht anniversary

Various communities in Germany are organizing events to commemorate the anniversary of the November 1938 pogroms, known as Kristallnacht. These events aim to honor the victims of Nazi persecution and prevent the recurrence of fascism and violence.

In Aschaffenburg, the Bündnis gegen Rechts Aschaffenburg-Miltenberg is hosting a rally and vigil on November 9, 2026. The program includes a memorial walk to the birthplace of Peter Gingold, a Jewish communist who fought against National Socialism and later joined the French Resistance. The event also includes visits to local memorial sites, such as Wolfsthalplatz.

In Berlin-Spandau, students from the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium, in collaboration with the Jugendgeschichtswerkstatt Spandau, are organizing a memorial walk through the Spandau old town. The initiative, titled “Walk through the Spandau Old Town – On the Traces of Jewish Business Life,” focuses on the history of Jewish commerce and the community that was systematically marginalized and persecuted by the National Socialists. Students will deliver presentations at former sites of Jewish businesses and the former Spandau Synagogue to bring these histories back into public consciousness.
