Germany to hold nationwide emergency warning test on September 10, 2026

Germany will conduct a nationwide warning day on September 10, 2026, to test the technical infrastructure of its emergency alert systems. The exercise is a joint effort between the federal government, state governments, and local municipalities.

Starting at approximately 11:00 AM, the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) will trigger a test warning via the Modular Warning System (MoWaS). This alert will be distributed through various channels, including warning apps like NINA, radio and television broadcasts, digital information displays, and Cell Broadcast services. Many municipalities will also activate local sirens and loudspeaker vehicles.

A notable feature of the 2026 exercise is the testing of the all-clear signal via Cell Broadcast, a service that allows messages to reach mobile devices without requiring an internet connection or a specific app. The test is scheduled to conclude with an all-clear signal around 11:45 AM. The primary goals are to verify system reliability, identify technical weaknesses, and familiarize the public with emergency procedures and personal preparedness.
