German business shifts: Commerzbank takeover talks and Schleich ownership battle
The German government is shifting its stance regarding UniCredit’s pursuit of Commerzbank. Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil has invited UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel to a meeting at the Federal Ministry of Finance on September 14 to discuss the bank's position. This marks a departure from the government's previous description of UniCredit's actions as “aggressive and hostile.” UniCredit has already secured nearly 50 percent of Commerzbank's shares. Commerzbank leadership has called for calm to avoid value-destroying uncertainty, emphasizing the bank's importance to the German economy.
In the toy industry, the German manufacturer Schleich is facing a potential change in ownership. Creditors, including H. I. G. Capital, intend to convert debt into company shares to gain control of the Schleich Group Holding. To address a short-term liquidity shortage, creditors plan to provide 5 million euros to the company. H. I. G. Capital has notified German and Austrian competition authorities of its intent.
Separately, GDC Deutschland GmbH, the owner of the Depot decoration chain, has announced it will cease business operations at the end of September. The company cited insolvency and insufficient assets to meet all liabilities. Approximately 730 employees face dismissal by the end of the month, though the owner intends to transfer the brand to a new entity.
