Germany to replace Bürgergeld with new basic security system in 2026

Germany is transitioning its social welfare system as 'Grundsicherung für Arbeitssuchende' (Basic Security for Jobseekers) is set to replace 'Bürgergeld' starting July 1, 2026. According to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), the new system aims to maintain a dignified minimum existence.

The monthly standard rates (Regelsatz) will remain unchanged during this transition. These rates are calculated based on individual circumstances, including age, living situation, and partnership status. For example, a single person receives a different amount than a family of four.

For individuals who work while receiving benefits, known as 'Aufstocker', specific income allowances apply. These allowances ensure that employment results in a noticeable increase in disposable income compared to receiving benefits without working. The Jobcenter calculates these benefits by considering the entire needs of the benefit community, including housing costs and standard requirements, while applying tiered exemptions to earned wages.
