Germany to implement minimum wage and pension reforms by 2027

Germany is implementing several significant changes to its labor and social security systems. Starting January 1, 2027, the statutory minimum wage will rise from 13.90 euros to 14.60 euros per hour. Simultaneously, the monthly earnings limit for minijobs will increase to 633 euros.

Regarding retirement, the standard retirement age for those born in 1964 or later is 67. To qualify for a regular pension, individuals must meet a minimum insurance period of five years (60 months). Additionally, a reform known as 'Mütterrente III' will increase the creditable child-rearing period for children born before 1992 to 36 months, effective January 1, 2027, with retroactive payments for 2027 to be processed in 2028.

Economic data also indicates rising costs for German employers, with sickness-related wage continuations costing approximately 85.6 billion euros in 2025. Meanwhile, social trends show a generational shift, with Gen Z employees increasingly utilizing a 'Lily Padding' strategy—frequently changing jobs to move closer to ideal career goals.
