Germany plans major social welfare and pension reforms for 2027

Germany is preparing for significant changes to its social welfare and pension systems starting in 2027. The federal government is planning to reform the calculation of basic security (Grundsicherung) benefits, moving toward a single-step adjustment based on a mix of price and wage developments. Additionally, a new state-subsidized retirement savings depot will launch in January 2027, offering up to 540 euros in annual basic subsidies for contributions of 1,800 euros.

The Pension Commission has proposed a major overhaul of the disability pension (Erwerbsminderungsrente). Key recommendations include doubling the duration of work trials from six to twelve months and introducing a 'protection pension' for long-term insured individuals. The commission also suggests re-evaluating how work capacity is assessed.

Other upcoming changes include the modernization of child benefit (Kindergeld) payments, which are expected to become application-free in 2027. Meanwhile, a health savings package will increase co-payments for prescription medications, raising the minimum from 5 to 7.50 euros and the maximum from 10 to 15 euros. Data also indicates that approximately 1.4 million people in Germany have been receiving long-term social assistance for at least five years.
