Germany to modernize design law in 2027

The German Bundestag has passed a law to modernize design law, marking its most significant update in years. Following approval by the Bundesrat, the new regulations are scheduled to take effect on December 9, 2027.

The reform expands the definitions of design and product to include digital elements such as animated logos, graphic user interfaces, virtual spaces, and 3D-printing models. It also aims to simplify procedures at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office and strengthen protections against modern forms of product piracy, such as the unauthorized distribution of digital files.

This transition period allows freelancers, agencies, and small businesses to review digital designs, application processes, and contracts to align with the upcoming legal framework.
