Germany to nominate Dörte Dinger for WFP Deputy Director role

The German government reportedly intends to nominate Dörte Dinger, the State Secretary for President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, for the position of Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome.

According to diplomatic sources, the move follows internal disagreements regarding Dinger's career path. While President Steinmeier reportedly wished for Dinger to return to the Federal Foreign Office after his term ends in March, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) allegedly opposed this plan.

Germany is one of the primary financiers of the WFP. Proponents of the nomination suggest that securing this high-level role could increase German visibility within the United Nations system, where German officials are currently considered underrepresented in leadership positions. The position of Executive Director was recently filled by Luke Lindberg, formerly of the US Department of Agriculture. Both the Federal Presidential Office and the Foreign Office have declined to comment on the specific personnel matter.
