Germany pension reform: Riester system to be replaced by investment depots
Germany is undergoing a significant overhaul of its private pension system, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. The reform, approved by the Bundestag and Bundesrat, will phase out the Riester pension system in favor of a new pension depot (Altersvorsorgedepot).
Unlike the Riester model, which required mandatory contribution guarantees that often led to low returns due to low-interest bond investments, the new pension depot will allow for direct investments in stocks, funds, and ETFs. This shift aims to foster a stronger stock market culture and provide more flexible, cost-effective, and yield-oriented long-term wealth accumulation. While the state will no longer provide the specific Riester-style support, the new system offers a maximum basic allowance of 540 euros per year.
Additional proposed changes from the Age Security Commission include coupling the standard retirement age to life expectancy after 2031 and potentially eliminating the option for pension reductions after 45 years of insurance. Furthermore, the basic pension supplement (Grundrentenzuschlag) will undergo recalculations in January 2027, with updated income thresholds for single individuals and couples.
