Germany to replace Bürgergeld with Grundsicherung, tightening job‑center sanctions

From 1 July 2026 Germany will end the Bürgergeld scheme and reintroduce the Grundsicherung system for long‑term unemployed. The reform raises sanctions for missed job‑center appointments – a second unexcused absence will see 30 % of the benefit deducted (about €169 for a single recipient) and a third will result in a total loss of the allowance. Recipients must attend appointments on time, submit required documents and accept offered jobs.

For single claimants the basic monthly rate remains €563, but housing, heating and possible additional needs bring total support to over €1,200. Asset limits are also revised, allowing younger claimants up to €5,000 in savings and those aged 30‑40 up to €10,000.

The changes aim to increase active participation while maintaining funding for language and integration courses.
