Germany to simplify tax office correspondence nationwide
German federal and state authorities are set to implement a nationwide initiative to simplify the language used in tax office correspondence. The project, initiated by North Rhine-Westphalia, aims to replace complex legal jargon with clear, understandable, and friendly text to improve citizen trust and administrative efficiency.
As part of the program, 730 text modules used in daily communication have been rewritten into simple language under scientific supervision. North Rhine-Westphalia Finance Minister Marcus Optendrenk stated that the goal is for citizens to immediately understand the content and required actions when opening official letters.
A study conducted by the Leibniz Institute for German Language involving more than 200 participants found that 90 percent of respondents—none of whom had prior experience with tax administration—rated the new formulations as more understandable and friendly. The initiative is expected to save time for citizens and allow tax offices to complete procedures more quickly.
