Germany to standardize childcare pension credits in 2027

Germany is implementing the ‘Mütterrente III’ reform to standardize pension credits for childcare periods. Starting January 1, 2027, all children will be credited with 36 months of childcare time, regardless of whether they were born before or after 1992. Previously, children born before 1992 were only credited with 30 months.

The reform, based on the ‘Law to Stabilize the Pension Level and to Achieve Full Equality of Childcare Periods,’ was passed by the Bundestag on December 5, 2025, and approved by the Bundesrat on December 19, 2025. It was officially announced in the Federal Law Gazette on December 23, 2025.

This change provides an additional half pension point per child. Based on the pension value effective July 1, 2026, this equates to a gross monthly increase of approximately 21.26 euros per child. While the law takes effect in 2027, the German Pension Insurance has noted that payments will be retroactive, though the actual increase in payouts will occur one year after the effective date.

Although commonly referred to as the ‘Mütterrente’ (mothers' pension), the benefits are available to both mothers and fathers, who may divide the childcare periods between them.
