Germany to supply Ukraine with thousands of interceptor drones
Germany has announced plans to provide Ukraine with tens of thousands of newly developed interceptor drones to counter advanced Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This initiative is part of a German military aid package intended for the 2026/2027 winter period.
The interceptor drones, named Spy, are being produced by a joint venture between Munich-based Quantum Systems and the Ukrainian manufacturer WIY. The system is specifically designed to target Russian Geran-series drones, which can strike deep into Ukrainian territory at speeds reaching 720 km/h.
Quantum Systems has signed a letter of intent for the supply. The company stated it can utilize existing manufacturing facilities to produce several thousand Spy units per month, with thousands reportedly ready for delivery as early as this year. While interception rates for Russian drones have recently improved to over 50 percent during night operations, some military experts remain skeptical, noting that current interceptor models may still be too slow to reliably counter newer Geran-5 variants.
