Germany: Traditional social interaction declines as digital media rises
A new study by the Hamburg-based Stiftung für Zukunftsfragen, titled the ‘Freizeit-Monitor’, indicates that traditional social interaction is declining in Germany. While meeting friends remains a primary social activity, the perceived value and frequency of such gatherings have dropped significantly. Only 19 percent of 3,000 surveyed individuals reported regularly spending time with friends, compared to 37 percent recorded 40 years ago.
Scientific director Ulrich Reinhardt notes that social contacts are increasingly shifting toward digital and individually planned formats. Modern media, including the internet, television, and mobile phones, now dominate daily life. The study highlights a surge in digital leisure: social media usage has risen to 71 percent, and video game popularity has increased from 9 to 33 percent.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is also becoming a significant part of leisure time, with 42 percent of respondents using it at least once a week. Among the 18-to-24 age demographic, AI usage reaches 62 percent. For younger people, AI serves not only as an information source but also as a guide, a source of validation, and potentially a substitute for human friendship.
