Germany traffic enforcement: High fines for illegal parking and roundabout errors

In Germany, motorists face significant financial penalties and legal consequences for various traffic violations. One notable enforcement measure involves the “red sticker” placed by police on vehicles that are not roadworthy or are illegally parked on public property. Owners are required to remove these vehicles within a specified timeframe. Failure to comply can result in the vehicle being towed, impounded, auctioned, or scrapped. In cases where auction proceeds do not cover the costs of towing and storage, owners may be held liable for remaining costs, which can reach up to 100,000 euros.

Additionally, improper conduct in roundabouts carries strict penalties. While traffic within a roundabout has priority, drivers must signal when exiting. Failure to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks within a roundabout can result in fines of up to 140 euros, a driving point, and a one-month driving ban. These regulations aim to mitigate the risks associated with navigating these increasingly common traffic structures.
