Germany: Traffic regulations and penalties for drivers

In Germany, drivers must adhere to specific safety protocols and regulations to avoid significant penalties. When stopping at red lights, a rule of thumb suggests maintaining a distance of approximately two meters from the vehicle ahead—enough to see the preceding car's rear tires—to prevent collisions. Additionally, vehicles must remain at least 10 meters away from a red traffic light to ensure the signal is not obscured.

Authorities also enforce strict rules regarding unauthorized vehicles. The police use a “red dot” sticker to mark non-roadworthy or unregistered vehicles parked on public property. Failure to remove these vehicles within a specified timeframe can lead to towing, impoundment, auctioning, or scrapping, with costs potentially reaching up to 100,000 euros if the vehicle's value does not cover the expenses.

Furthermore, severe driving offenses can lead to the revocation of driving privileges. Under Section 69 of the German Criminal Code (StGB), courts may determine that a driver is unfit to operate motor vehicles due to the nature of their illegal actions. While many driving bans are temporary, courts have the authority to impose lifetime bans on driving licenses to protect public safety.
