Germany traffic regulations: High fines for parking and vehicle violations

Various traffic regulations in Germany carry significant financial penalties for motorists. Drivers who ignore a red sticker placed by police on non-compliant or unregistered vehicles parked on public property face severe consequences. If the vehicle is not removed within the specified timeframe, it may be towed, impounded, auctioned, or scrapped, with costs potentially reaching up to 100,000 euros.

Regarding parking, manipulating a parking disc to extend permitted time is prohibited. According to the ADAC, fines for such violations range from 20 euros for up to 30 minutes of overstaying to 40 euros for more than three hours.

Additionally, carrying certain knives in a vehicle can lead to fines of up to 10,000 euros under the Weapons Act. Prohibited items include one-handed knives or fixed-blade knives exceeding 12 centimeters in length, unless the driver can demonstrate a legitimate interest and the item is not kept within immediate reach, such as in a glove compartment.
