Germany: Traffic violations and distracted driving lead to heavy fines
In Germany, motorists face significant financial penalties for specific traffic and vehicle violations. One major risk involves the “Red Dot” sticker placed by police on vehicles that are not roadworthy or are illegally parked on public property. If owners fail to remove these vehicles within a specified timeframe, the police may tow, auction, or scrap them. The owner is responsible for all associated costs, including processing fees, towing, and storage, which can reach up to 100,000 euros if the vehicle's value does not cover the expenses.
Additionally, drivers can be fined for distracted driving caused by operating electronic vehicle features, such as heated seats, while in motion. Under Paragraph 23 of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), using such devices is only permitted if it requires only a brief glance. Violations can result in fines ranging from 100 to 200 euros and potential driving bans, particularly if the distraction leads to endangering others or property damage.
