German tourism faces last‑minute doubts amid heat wave and rising costs

Travel expert Thorsten Stork warns that last‑minute vacation bookings “seltener lohnen” because dynamic pricing by airlines and hotels raises prices as demand rises, especially during the peak summer months. He advises flexible travellers to scrutinise cancellation terms and hidden fees.

A recent IHK Nord survey of more than 320 North‑German tourism firms found that over half anticipate a weak summer season, citing steep energy and fuel prices as the main risk. IHK Nord chairman André Grobien said, “Die Tourismuswirtschaft ist ein bedeutender Wirtschaftsfaktor für Norddeutschland – und die aktuellen Umfrageergebnisse geben Anlass zur Sorge.”

Heat‑wave forecasts across Southern Europe predict temperatures of 40 °C or higher in Spain, France, Italy and Croatia, raising concerns for holiday‑makers and prompting warnings about fire risk.

Meanwhile, the Bundesverband deutscher Banken notes that Turkey offers the strongest purchasing power for German travellers – a euro buys the equivalent of €1.79 worth of goods and services there, far outpacing Poland, Hungary, Greece or Spain. This price advantage may attract budget‑conscious tourists despite rising costs elsewhere.
