Germany unemployment falls below three million in September
Unemployment in Germany fell below the three million mark in September, reaching 2.994 million people. This represents a decrease of 67,000 compared to August, though the figure remains 40,000 higher than in September 2025. The unemployment rate dropped by 0.1 percentage points to 6.4 percent.
Andrea Nahles, Chairwoman of the Federal Employment Agency, noted that while a seasonal autumn recovery is beginning, the start is “sluggish” and economic improvements have not yet fully reached the labor market. Demand for labor remains weak, despite 660,000 reported vacancies, which is 30,000 more than a year ago.
Regional trends show varied results. In Saxony, unemployment fell to 7.1 percent, while in Thuringia, it dropped to 6.3 percent. Conversely, Bremen and Berlin maintain higher rates at 11.2 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively. In several regions, such as the Ortenau and Unna, seasonal trends led to slight improvements in employment numbers, particularly among young people starting vocational training.
