Germany updates dog ownership rules and pet access
Dog ownership and pet access are seeing various developments across Germany. In Bremen, new regulations implemented as of July 1, 2026, require new owners to pass a theoretical competency exam before acquiring a dog, followed by a practical exam within the first year.
In Karlsruhe, the Zoologischer Stadtgarten is expanding its dog-friendly offerings. Following successful trial periods, the zoo will allow dogs on specific weekends: November 7-8 and December 12-13, 2026, as well as January 16-17 and February 13-14, 2027. All visiting dogs must remain on a leash to protect the zoo's wildlife, particularly free-roaming birds.
Additionally, a community voting event is underway in the Allgäu region to select the 'cutest dogs,' encouraging local residents to participate in celebrating their pets.
