Germany updates KfW construction and accessibility subsidies

Germany is seeing divergent developments in federal construction and accessibility subsidies. The KfW 455-B program, which provides grants for barrier-reducing measures such as stairlifts, has been exhausted as of July 31, 2026. While existing applications are being processed, no new applications are being accepted. The VdK social association has criticized potential future budget cuts for this program, noting a national need of at least 390 million euros to support independent living.

In contrast, the federal government has announced it will continue and increase funding for the KfW Efficiency House 55 (EH55) standard. This decision was welcomed by the Central Association of the German Construction Industry (ZDB), which noted that the move provides much-needed planning security for families and small investors. The ZDB emphasized the importance of reliable, interest-stable subsidies to prevent delays in the housing market, where construction timelines often average 27 months.
