Germany urged to pay living Polish war victims

The German newspaper Die Welt has called on the German government to immediately begin making payments to living Polish victims of war and occupation. The commentary emphasizes that while the 1.3 trillion euro reparation claims made by some Polish factions are considered unrealistic, Germany has a moral obligation to provide compensation to survivors.

Specifically, the appeal targets former concentration camp prisoners, forced laborers, and insurgents. The reporting notes that negotiations regarding compensation for living victims are currently at an impasse, and the window for effective aid is closing as the number of survivors decreases.

The analysis references comments by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephula regarding Germany’s guilt and responsibility. It suggests that a decisive move to commit to immediate payments for living victims could serve as a significant symbolic gesture of reconciliation between Germany and Poland.
