Germany urges EU to increase import restrictions on Chinese goods
Germany is urging the European Union to implement additional import restrictions on Chinese goods to protect key European industries, including the chemical, mechanical engineering, and pharmaceutical sectors. The call comes as the EU trade deficit with China reaches record levels, with some estimates placing the imbalance at 360 billion euros in 2025.
EU leaders are meeting in Brussels to discuss these rising trade deficits and the potential for stricter commercial defense mechanisms. While recent measures included quotas on hybrid vehicles, German officials argue a broader approach is necessary to prevent European markets from being flooded by subsidized Chinese products.
In a separate development, the EU is reportedly negotiating with China to secure an exemption for the German company Sindlhauser Materials from Chinese sanctions. Sindlhauser, a key supplier to the Dutch semiconductor firm ASML, faces potential bankruptcy due to its dependence on Chinese critical minerals. In exchange for the exemption, the EU may consider lifting trade restrictions on a Chinese company accused of assisting Russia in its war against Ukraine.
