Germany urges Slovakia to increase solidarity against Russian threat

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on Slovakia to show greater solidarity with the European Union in its efforts to counter Russian influence and implement sanctions. During a meeting in Bratislava with his Slovak counterpart, Juraj Blanár, Wadephul characterized Russian imperialism as the primary threat to European freedom and security. He emphasized that it would be 'irresponsible' to question this threat and stressed that the EU cannot allow individual member states to block collective strategic decisions.

In response, Juraj Blanár condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a violation of international law but maintained that the conflict cannot be resolved through military means, asserting that dialogue with Moscow is inevitable. Blanár also highlighted the significant challenges Slovakia faces in decoupling from Russian energy. He noted that the country's infrastructure has been built around Russian supplies for decades, making an immediate transition difficult. While Slovakia is working to diversify its energy sources—such as through natural gas imports from Algeria and alternative oil routes via Croatia—Blanár warned that a sudden break from Russian energy would cause 'huge problems.'
