Germany's Johann Wadephul to represent nation at UN General Assembly

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is traveling to New York for the UN General Assembly, where he will represent Germany alongside Environment Minister Carsten Schneider and Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan. Chancellor Friedrich Merz will not attend the assembly, remaining in Germany to address domestic political developments following recent election losses in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Wadephul has called for the UN to move beyond merely assessing global crises and instead focus on concrete steps toward resolving conflicts, specifically in Ukraine and the Middle East. He emphasized that Russia must be encouraged to enter serious negotiations and urged the international community to take greater responsibility for maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab to protect free trade routes.

Domestically, the CDU faces significant pressure. Following electoral setbacks, members of the Junge Union and other party leaders have called for urgent structural reforms and a change in political direction to address issues such as energy costs, migration, and social stability.
