Germany utilizes AI tools to combat disinformation and simplify election programs

In Germany, new artificial intelligence initiatives are being deployed to address challenges surrounding upcoming elections. In Berlin, Interior Senator Iris Spranger announced the launch of ‘Gretchenfrage’, a digital tool designed to help citizens identify disinformation on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and X. The tool allows users to submit content to check for signs of manipulation, such as AI-generated images, videos, or fabricated quotes. Officials emphasized that the tool is not a ‘truth machine’ and does not provide political evaluations, but rather aims to encourage more critical consumption of online content.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the Institute for Democracy and Artificial Intelligence (IDemKI) is using AI to visually represent the political platforms of the seven strongest parties. By generating images based strictly on party manifestos, the project seeks to make complex election programs more accessible and stimulate public dialogue. For example, depictions based on Green Party programs focus on renewable energy and public transit, while depictions based on AfD programs include increased police presence and industrial activity. The project aims to foster AI literacy and engagement among voters who may not read lengthy party documents.
