Germany vehicle towing: regulations and recovery procedures

In Germany, vehicles may be towed for obstructing traffic, blocking fire access, parking at bus stops, or parking in prohibited areas. Leaving a note on the windshield stating a driver will return shortly provides no legal protection against towing.

Certain transport authorities, such as the Berliner Verkehrsgesellschaft (BVG) and Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe (MVB), are authorized to independently tow vehicles that block tracks or bus lanes. Additionally, police may order a vehicle to be towed to prevent theft if windows are left open, even if no parking violation has occurred.

Once a vehicle is on a towing company's platform, the company acquires a legal lien, meaning the car will only be released after the associated fees are paid. If a vehicle is missing, the ADAC recommends contacting the local police station or the regulatory office (Ordnungsamt) rather than calling emergency services.
