Germany: Walking clubs combat loneliness and improve mental health

Walking clubs are emerging across Germany as a way to foster social connections and improve mental well-being. In Holzminden, the Kneipp-Verein and St. Thomasgemeinde have launched a free, non-denominational group walking program. Participants meet monthly for walks through the city park, followed by social gatherings with coffee and pastries to prevent isolation.

Similar informal movements are seen in cities like Leipzig and Dresden, where walking clubs help participants form lasting friendships and social circles. These groups often organize through online networks, catering to various interests such as dog walking or specific demographics.

Scientific research supports the benefits of these activities. A study published in ‘Nature Mental Health’ involving over 23,000 individuals found that increasing daily steps is linked to a lower statistical probability of depression. Additionally, research in ‘Lancet Regional Health – Europe’ indicated that nature-based activities can significantly reduce feelings of loneliness.
