Germany: Warning signs and effects of date rape drugs

Authorities in Germany, including the Baden-Württemberg police, are highlighting the dangers of date rape drugs, which are substances administered to individuals without their knowledge or consent to induce helplessness or loss of control. Common substances used include anesthetics, sedatives, and party drugs such as GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate) or GBL (Gamma-Butyrolactone).

Symptoms of being under the influence of these substances can include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, sweating, shortness of breath, muscle cramps, disorientation, and memory loss. At higher doses, victims may experience confusion, respiratory arrest, or unconsciousness. Because these substances are often odorless and tasteless, they can be difficult to distinguish from alcohol intoxication, though the effects of date rape drugs typically manifest much faster, often within 10 to 20 minutes.
