Germany is facing a series of drone-related security incidents that officials have characterized as part of a "daily hybrid warfare" campaign by foreign powers. The concerns intensified after an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport near Ukrainian transport aircraft. Investigators are looking into whether a second drone acted as a "mothership" to control the device.

Following this, unidentified drones were spotted over a Bundeswehr military base in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia, which houses sensitive Patriot missile system components. The Euskirchen Police Department has opened an investigation into these sightings.

In response, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced plans to strengthen Germany's anti-drone capabilities. The government aims to double the federal anti-drone expert team from 150 to 300 and expand the network of operational bases from four to eight. Additionally, a new drone security research facility is scheduled to open on August 18 at a German Aerospace Center (DLR) testing airfield in Saxony-Anhalt to develop advanced detection and neutralization technologies.

A study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) suggests that Europe is currently insufficiently prepared for such drone campaigns, noting that authorities struggle with fragmented responsibilities and slow attribution of attacks. While some lawmakers have suggested Russian involvement, the Russian embassy in Berlin has dismissed the Leipzig incident as a "fabricated provocation."
