Germany warns of political exploitation of East German nostalgia

German authorities have issued warnings regarding attempts by political extremists to minimize the atrocities committed by the former East German (GDR) communist regime. This trend comes amid rising nostalgia for the former state ahead of decisive regional elections.

During a ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of the Berlin Wall, German Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer described the SED regime as a “brutal dictatorship” characterized by a lack of free elections, press freedom, and freedom of movement, enforced by the Stasi secret police and execution squads. Evelyn Zupke, a Bundestag representative for victims of the regime, noted a tendency to romanticize the past and obscure the harsh realities of life in the GDR.

Dieter Dombrowski, president of the Union of Associations of Victims of the Communist Dictatorship, highlighted the growing pressure on democracy. He cited an electoral rally by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt, where the former GDR anthem was sung. In that region, the AfD currently leads conservatives in polls by nearly 20 percentage points, potentially making it the first German state to be governed by the far-right party.
