Germany faces risk of violent conflict with Russia, warns intelligence chief

German intelligence officials have warned that the country faces a real risk of violent conflict with Russia. During a parliamentary hearing, Martin Jäger, head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), stated that the confrontation with Russia has entered a “new, more dangerous dimension.”

Intelligence leaders described an ongoing “shadow war” characterized by hybrid tactics, including cyberattacks, disinformation, and sabotage. Officials cited an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport in August as a specific example of Russian aggression. Sinan Selen, head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), emphasized that these attacks are occurring now, rather than in the future.

While some military leaders, such as Inspector General Karsten Breuer, suggested Russia could militarily challenge NATO by 2029, intelligence services warned that the current situation is actively deteriorating. In response to these tensions, the German government previously ordered the closure of the Russian consulate and cultural center in Berlin.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied intentions to attack NATO members, stating that Russia has no intention of attacking anyone but would respond if targeted by aggression.
