Germany warns of Russian aggression and secures defense plans

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful has warned the UN Security Council regarding the escalation of Russian hybrid aggression in Europe. Addressing the 81st UN General Assembly, Wadeful highlighted increasing threats to international law and those supporting Ukraine, citing a recent attempt to attack the Leipzig airport using explosive-laden drones to target Ukrainian cargo planes.

Wadeful also noted that Russian actions are deepening the global food crisis by targeting Ukrainian ports and preventing grain exports. He called for an immediate ceasefire, the exchange of prisoners of war, and a return to negotiations based on international law to achieve a lasting peace.

Concurrently, the German government is addressing internal security concerns regarding a 1,000-page secret defense plan, known as ‘Oplan’, designed to counter potential Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s administration is seeking to restrict access to this document to prevent the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party from obtaining it. Military leadership expressed concerns that the party, which has seen electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt, might share sensitive strategic information with Moscow. The AfD has criticized these measures as undemocratic.
