Rheinland-Pfalz police warn of deadly heat risks for children, pets and food safety this summer

The Landeskriminalamt (LKA) of Rheinland‑Pfalz issued an urgent alert as temperatures above 30 °C are expected. It cautions that even a few minutes in a parked car can turn the interior into a lethal heat trap, endangering children and pets whose bodies cannot regulate temperature well. The agency urges drivers to always check rear seats, never leave minors or animals unattended, and to call emergency services (110 or 112) if a trapped victim is discovered.

Separately, the veterinary and consumer‑protection department of the Rhein‑Neckar‑Kreis health office released guidance for safe grilling and food handling during hot weather. It stresses that pathogens multiply rapidly in warm conditions, so perishable items such as meat, fish, salads and cream‑based foods must stay continuously refrigerated. Recommendations include using cool boxes, keeping raw and ready‑to‑eat foods separate, washing hands and surfaces thoroughly, and promptly refrigerating leftovers, especially at public festivals.
