Germany warns on excess sugar intake and dog‑toxic substitutes

German health guides explain how to recognise signs of excessive sugar consumption, such as intense cravings, fatigue after meals and rapid fluctuations in blood‑sugar levels. They note that hidden sugars are common in heavily processed foods and that over‑consumption increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, dental decay and other chronic conditions. The guides advise consumers to read ingredient lists, listen to bodily cues and limit daily added sugars as recommended by the German Nutrition Society and the German Diabetes Association.

The same sources also discuss sugar‑substitute alternatives like erythritol and xylitol (E 967/E 968), highlighting their low‑calorie benefits and minimal impact on insulin for humans. However, they warn that xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and can cause rapid hypoglycaemia and liver failure, making it essential for pet owners to keep products containing xylitol out of reach of their animals.
