Germany warns parents of poisonous houseplants for children

German safety organisation Das sichere Haus (DSH) advises that several popular indoor and garden plants contain toxic substances that can cause health problems in young children. The advisory lists Monstera (fensterblatt), Epipremnum aureum (Efeutute) and Dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachie) as especially hazardous. Contact with their sap may cause skin irritation, swelling of mucous membranes, eye irritation and, if ingested, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, heart‑rate increase, fainting or, in severe cases, breathing difficulties.

The white berries of the snow‑ball plant, known as “Knallerbsen”, are weakly toxic but can still trigger nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea when eaten in larger amounts. Because children have low body weight, they are particularly vulnerable to these effects. The DSH urges families to keep such plants out of reach of small children.
