Water reserves in Germany and Europe face worsening deficit
Research conducted by the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam (GFZ) in collaboration with NASA and the German Aerospace Center indicates that water deficits in Germany and Europe have worsened in recent months. Scientists warn that water storage levels are unlikely to recover by the end of the year, even if autumn rainfall exceeds typical levels.
Data shows that since 2015, Germany has experienced increasingly dry conditions compared to the previous 15-year period. While a rainy 2024 provided a temporary recovery, water reserves have since seen a sharp decline. Researchers emphasize that the primary driver of this depletion is rising temperatures, which increase potential evaporation, rather than a long-term decrease in precipitation amounts.
The decline in groundwater storage is identified as the main factor responsible for the long-term reduction in Germany's water reserves. Current data through June does not yet reflect the impact of recent heatwaves, which scientists expect will become evident in data released during the autumn.
