Rhine and Danube low water levels disrupt European river freight
Low water levels on the Rhine and Danube rivers are causing significant disruptions to European logistics and the energy sector. The Rhine's water level at Kaub dropped to just 8 centimeters on August 18, well below the 78-centimeter threshold required for easy navigation. This drought has forced cargo ships to reduce their loads significantly; in Romania, vessels on the Danube had to decrease capacity by up to 40 percent.
The Rhine and Danube together account for approximately 72 percent of Europe's internal river freight traffic. The current crisis is impacting major economies, particularly in Germany, Hungary, and Romania. In Bavaria, the Danube's draft has fallen to 1.20 meters, far below the 2.50 meters required for standard freight ships. Consequently, the shipping company Bayerischer Lloyd has moved its nine vessels from the Danube to the Rhine.
Experts from the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) warn that the summer of 2026 was an unprecedented extreme event characterized by record temperatures and lack of precipitation. There are concerns that these low water levels may persist in the coming years, potentially becoming a new normal for the region.
