Germany winter forecast predicts mild temperatures with potential cold snaps

Long-term meteorological models for the 2026/27 winter season in Germany suggest a trend toward milder temperatures. Data from the ECMWF indicates that December 2026 may be significantly warmer than average, with temperatures potentially one to two degrees above the mean.

However, experts note that a mild average does not preclude extreme weather events. In January, high-pressure systems over Scandinavia or Eastern Europe could trigger sudden cold snaps, leading to freezing temperatures and icy road conditions. The German Weather Service (DWD) also notes that the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific may increase the likelihood of milder early winter months in Western Europe.

In the short term, weather shifts are already being observed. Cold air from the north is expected to reach parts of Germany, bringing frost and the first snow to higher elevations such as the Alps, the Black Forest, and the Harz mountains. Meanwhile, in North Rhine-Westphalia, recent forecasts indicate a transition from cloudy, rainy conditions to drier, clearer weather mid-week.
