Germany women's hockey team defeats Scotland in World Cup opener

The German women's field hockey team opened their World Cup campaign in Wavre, Belgium, with a 3-0 victory over Scotland. All three goals were scored by players making their World Cup debuts.

Yani Zhong opened the scoring in the 20th minute following an own goal by a Scottish defender. Johanna Hachenberg extended the lead in the 25th minute after her shot was deflected by Millie Steiger. Lynn Krings secured the final goal in the 60th minute via a penalty corner variation.

German head coach Janneke Schopman expressed satisfaction with the performance, noting the team was prepared and executed well, though she suggested they could have scored more goals. Scotland, returning to the tournament for the first time in 24 years, had two notable opportunities in the third quarter that were prevented by German goalkeeper Nathalie Kubalski.
