Data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) indicates that the proportion of young people in Germany has reached a historical low. By the end of 2025, individuals aged 15 to 24 represented 10.0 percent of the population, totaling 8.3 million people.
Regional variations are significant. The city-states of Bremen (11.1%) and Hamburg (10.5%), along with Baden-Württemberg (10.4%), report higher-than-average youth populations. Conversely, eastern regions like Brandenburg (8.8%), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (9.1%), and Saxony-Anhalt (9.1%) show lower levels.
Demographic trends are also influenced by migration. The share of young people among those with a migration history (defined as having immigrated or having parents who immigrated since 1950) is 12.2%, compared to 8.5% for those without a migration history. On a broader scale, Germany's youth proportion remains below the European Union average of 10.7%.
