In 2025, 16.1% of Germans were classified as at risk of poverty, defined as having a net monthly income below 60 % of the median. This threshold equals €1,446 for single adults and €3,036 for a household with two adults and two children under 14. Single parents face the highest risk, with more than 41 % considered vulnerable, while retirees and low‑wage workers also rank among the most affected.

The average gross annual salary for waste workers in Germany has risen to about €53,706, reflecting stronger tariff agreements and higher wages in both the public and private sectors. Pay varies by region, ranging from roughly €47,200 in Brandenburg to €56,200 in Baden‑Württemberg, and includes additional bonuses for night shifts or holiday work. The profession, now officially termed “Müllwerker,” encompasses duties in collection, recycling facilities and waste processing plants.
